The Spring TA Orientation will be held online via a Blackboard training website.
All first-time Teaching Assistants must register for access. Registration will open in winter 2021-2022.
Access will be granted to the Blackboard site on TBD DATE/TIME and you will be alerted of access via email. Questions can be sent to TeachingAcademy@jhu.edu.
Sessions & Schedule
TAs who complete the above registration will receive access to the TA Orientation training site in Blackboard.
This site will consist of the following:
- Opening Plenary Session (asynchronous): The opening plenary session will be pre-recorded and available asynchronously. The session will discuss a variety of teaching-related issues, including academic ethics, disabilities, academic support, and suggestions to help you become an effective teacher. It is mandatory that you view the plenary session in its entirety but you may do so at your own convenience (please view by the start of the semester.
- Breakout Sessions (asynchronous): A series of breakout sessions on various pedagogical topics will be pre-recorded by Homewood faculty and staff and will be available to view asynchronously. These sessions are optional but recommended and can be viewed at your own convenience.
- Live Sessions (synchronous): Live sessions will be offered on TBD DATE/TIMES. In these open-ended discussion sessions, experienced TAs will answer your questions and share strategies to help you feel prepared to start teaching at JHU. These sessions are optional but highly recommended.
- Teaching Assistant Manual and other resources: The Teaching Assistant Manual will be available for download—along with additional links to helpful resources. The manual lists general teaching resources available at Hopkins – e.g., TA-specific services offered by the library, services offered to students with disabilities, faculty responsibilities in working with such students, etc.
CER has worked with the GRO to ensure its members are informed of all changes to the TA Training program. CER has met with the GRO board to discuss items to go into a TA Training section of the Graduate Student Portal. The GRO website links to the CER website, which in turn, links to TA Training. The GRO also distributes TA training-related information through its list-serv.
In addition to the facilitators who will present the synchronous and asynchronous sessions, we would like to acknowledge the internal team who worked to convert this in-person institute to an online format in response to the COVID-19 campus restrictions.
